With tiles by Colin Minton-Campbell, this Victorian geometric floor had seen quite a deal of traffic in the last 100 or so years, with the main thoroughfare showing more wear than the borders. But save for a few loose tiles the floor was nice and intact.

This Victorian tiled hallway in Birmingham was laid in a herringbone design with tiles from Craven Dunnill. And as you can see the tiles were covered with our most loathed of coverings; shellac varnish. The varnish had really soaked into the tiles, removing this was never going to be easy.

- A wonderful Minton tiled hallway in Derby, this Victorian geometric floor was in a nice overall condition with only a few loose tiles that needed refixing. It was pretty obvious that at some stage the floor had been treated with an oil, artifacts of the oil staining were visible in some places.

This quarry tile floor was found under carpet in a lovely Victorian house in one of the suburbs of Leicester. As you can see the floor was splattered with paint, old varnish, oxidised oil and wallpaper, plus carpet grippers where still attached to the tiles.

We are always asked if we can supply original tiles or use original tiles in our restoration work and to be honest, wherever possible we do try to include original tiles in all our work. But only if they are a better match than replicas. As often older tiles have been stained by years of treament and different cleaning regimes; so they don't always match any better.
Even though we have pretty good suppliers of original Victorian floor tiles, we always need more tiles. So if you have a spare tiles or even if you have a floor that you would like to sell, we will ensure the tiles are recycled in the most ethical of ways; straight into period floors.

A truly gorgeous Victorian tiled floor in Loughborough. We thought the floor had a wonderful colour scheme and encaustic tile designs. Although the floor had a few signs of damage, caused by clumsy carpet fitters in the past the tiles were in a real nice condition.

This little red quarry hallway had been hidden under carpet for many years and really needed a little TLC. After dealing with a few minor repairs, the quarries were treated to a deep cleaning and a colour enhancing sealer. The final finish is a hard wearing high gloss finish.

This detailed floor in Sandbach Cheshire is made of Malkin Edge tiles and has quite a wide range of subtle shades used in the floors design. Unfortunately over the years the floor has become very badly stained with the current DIY trends of the day; linseed oil being the major offender as there are large patches of oxidised oil in the tile body.

This Edwardian marbled terracotta tile hallway in Melton Mowbray Leicestershire struck us a being rather different, normally we don't work with these type of tiles but being as they are so unusual we decided to take the project on. As you can see the far end of the hallway is suffering badly from efflorescence that is rising through the tiles.

An original Minton-Hollins Victorian tiled hallway in Sherwood Nottingham. After fixing a few loose tiles, we gave the floor a thorough deep cleaning and applied our premium sealer. Once dried we applied plenty of our satin finish to really draw out those lovely red tiles.

Beneath the old varnish in this Walsall hallway lies a fantastic Victorian tiled floor with tiles by Craven Dunnill. Overall the floor was in really nice condition with a few smatterings of character in the form of the odd small oil stain and a couple of small cracks. Our first task was to remove the varnish and get to the dirt below.

Our task on this Victorian hallway in Rippingale Lincolnshire was to try and camouflage the brush marks that can be seen in the 'before' photos. The brush marks had been caused by bleaching of the clay body with the use of a readily available DIY product; not that the owners had done anything wrong and had simply followed the products directions.

This simply stunning Victorian tiled hallway in Stoke-on-Trent had a huge array of contaminants absorbed into the clay body, which had until we arrived resisted all cleaning products thrown at it; including brick acid!! Naturally we saw the potential to restore this floor back to its glory and accepted the challenge to scrub this Victorian hall floor back to life.

This Victorian floor in Belper, Derbyshire was a real tough cookie, mainly because of the material used for the tiles. You be forgiven in thinking that they are all unglazed clay bodied tiles, but they are not. Only the red, black and brown colours are clay, the buff colours are made from sandstone which being so very porous has drawn 100+ years of dirt and staining too deep within the body to completely remove.

A wonderful Victorian geometric floor in central Derby. After carrying out a few necessary repairs, we deep cleaned the floor using some of our new penetrating cleaners to remove some aged in linseed oil stains. Then we revitalised the floor with a high gloss finish bringing more light into the hallway and enhancing the colours of the Victorian tiles.

A stunning Victorian tiled hallway in Peterborough, tiles were manufactured by Minton Hollins of Stoke on Trent. The subtle earth colours mixed with blue and white really highlight the encaustics used in this floor to great effect. Overall this Victorian floor was in really nice condition, save for a few loose tiles and oil stains dotted here and there.

A truly gorgeous Victorian tiled hallway in Worcester. Unfortunately this floor had been treated with linseed oil and coated with a wood varnish which really had stained the floor badly in a few areas. We managed to strip the varnish without too much trouble, though the linseed as always was a pain and had oxidised deep within the tile body so some traces are left, could not be removed.

This Victorian tiled hallway floor in Belper, Derbyshire had a coating of old sealer underneath which was trapped dirt that would forever reduce this floor natural good looks. After stripping away said sealer, we thoroughly cleaned the floor right into the edges and corners, and finished the floor off with a colour enhancing high gloss polish.

A nice little Victorian quarry tile floor in Leeds which had been covered over with carpet for many years before the new owners revealed this gem. From the initial enquiry photos we could tell there was a build up of moisture below the tile surface and had a sneaking feeling that this floor had already been sealed in some fashion. A fabulous Victorian tiled hallway in Stafford which had seen years of use, traffic soiling and oil sealing. After thoroughly cleaning the floor and replacing some missing tiles and grout we began sealing the floor against stains. The final process was to polish the floor with a rich satin gloss finish.

Here we have Edwardian Art Deco unglazed tiles that have been covered with bitumen backed vinyl tiles. After a thorough cleaning and replacement of missing grout, we then set about enhancing the colours and leaving a subtle shine.

Black and white chequer board floors in Oadby Leicester. Knighton has some fantastic floors and these were no exception. Though they are not the most complex of designs, they have been very well laid and their symmetry is spot on.

Kellie and I definitely rate this floor as one of the most beautiful we have worked on, it blends a variety of colours and encaustics around a simple cross formation; absolutely stunning.

A truly wonderful floor over in Stone Staffordshire. The owners had originally found the floor under carpet and over the years worked hard to remove the old adhesive and underlay rubber. Their efforts to maintain this beautiful floor have certainly paid off as there was very little dirt on the floor; compared to the average Minton floor of this age.

This original floor Minton geometric floor in Quorn Leicestershire had been found underneath an old carpet. Naturally like all of our customers, the owner had real taste and knew the floor would look far more impressive than any carpet and more hygienic to boot.

This original floor has seen a lot of efflorescence activity over the years since it was first laid. Much of the efflorescence had been left untreated and as a result had become calcified into the tile body, pretty much rendering it part of the tile.

This is just one section of a floor we recently repaired for the Framework housing association in Nottingham. The floor had seen some serious traffic over the years and the original tiles from the Campbell Tile & Brick company had worn quite badly. As you can see from the photos pretty much every tiles has been cracked.

Initially this beautiful Minton floor in Sutton Coldfield had been restored by another company. Unfortunately the results where not acceptable due to the fact that the polish turned opaque in large areas within a few days of being applied. There were also numerous points of damage to the property during the cleaning process.

At some stage in this floors life, there was a pipe laid straight through. And the unsympathetic repair really was horribly done. Over time the concrete had discoloured, moved and cracked and ultimately been repair again in a fashion.

This wonderful original floor had been kept in fantastic condition over its lifetime. Unfortunately there was layer upon layer of old sealers and polishes on the floor which had dirt trapped both between the layers and beneath them.

This floor was a little deceptive as it really didn't look at dirty. But under a coating of old polish, dirty was trapped and somewhat ingrained. Plus there was the usual paint spots that are left behind on most decorating works

This floor was always going to be a real challenge and unfortunately it would never be perfect once the contaminants where removed. Being a floor of soft clay tiles which are naturally porous they stain easily and are able absorb large quantities of pretty much anything left on them.

Here is a nice floor from Long Eaton in really nice condition with only a few signs of movement. As a result there were a few loose tiles that needed to be re-fixed.

This floor really was a catalogue of errors. Even though this floor had been previously restored we found that their attempts had been nothing more than poor bodges. With everything from the wrong type sealers applied onto top of old sealers and lots of dirt, to failing to completely neutralise their cleaning agents

This herringbone tile floor in Harborne needed a deep clean and a good seal to draw out those lustrous Victorian tile floor colours. After removing remnants of old polish and some ingrained dirt we set about cleaning away the cement residues that has collected in the pores of the tiles over the years.

A superb example of geometric flooring craftsmanship! This floor is still in fantastic condition and flat as can be. With the majority colours being rather neutral, more emphasis is placed on the blue squared areas once the sealer and polish has been applied.

This job had a few problems and limitations that we needed to overcome from the start. Firstly the hallway was initially over-tiled with ceramic tiles and as a result the old cement adhesive needed to be removed from the original tiles.

Unfortunately due to excessive amounts of new enquiries, pre-planned work and long term contracts, we are having to reduce our coverage radius in order to continue providing the highest quality service available. What an amazing floor this is. Located in one of the more salubrious areas of the park in Nottingham; it really is a gem. How often do you find a floor with as many encaustic tiles as this? Very few to be honest and considering the floors excellent condition, it is all the more rare.
The finish is a subtle sheen that gently enhances the overall colour and reduces cleaning time by providing a hard wearing coating on top of the tiles.

For this floor we had to hand cut a range of different sized tiles to repair and area which hand been concreted over when the plumbers had finished installing heating pipes. Once we removed the old concrete and strips of angle bead used to strengthen the concrete, we neatly cut back the existing mortar bed and prepared the area for refilling with a highly flexible self levelling compound. As you’ll see from the photos the floor looks much improved, even though the ‘after’ photos show the cleaned floor in between coats of sealer, the finished article was a much more consistent finish.

Here’s few photos of a floor in Stafford, that we have recently completed. The floor had basically been sealed numerous times with different types of floor varnish, with a sandwich of dirt between each layer of dirt. But with wear the varnish had become scratched and worn and allowed dirt to penetrate the surface.

Just a few photos of a beautiful herringbone pattern floor in West Bridgford Nottingham, tiles are from the Campbell Tile Company and as you see they look simply amazing once cleaned and sealed. The after shots show the floor mid-way through the sealing stage, though still drying we are really pleased with the results.

Where’s all the grout gone? In the case of Victorian tiled floors you’ll find that there was never a real grout, more the use of a cement slurry or the actual mortar material was used.

A few before and after photos of a hallway floor cleaning project in West Bridgford Nottingham. The project included replacing damaged tiles and reaffixing loose original tiles and finally sealing and coating the whole floor. The floor had badly ingrained dirt and grime; even though the current owner cleaned the floor on a regular basis using normal household products.

Just a quick few photos of a floor we recently cleaned in West Bridgford Nottingham. After we stripped off the cement dust and ground in dirt that no amount of normal cleaner would ever touch. We sealed the floor with our own range of colour enhancing sealers plus a satin sheen finish. The after photos show the floor still drying, so there will be some high points yet to dry off.

When we have inspected floors cleaned by other companies, namely carpet cleaning companies. We have found that these use a cheap topical coating as its sole stain protection. A coating that will wear down with foot traffic and with some stronger cleaning products, allowing dirt, water and stains back into the tile body. It takes us literally seconds to remove these products when cleaning.

Here is a small example of cleaning the hallways of West Bridgford Nottingham. Unfortunately the photos haven’t really conveyed the difference between the before and after due to the lack of natural light in the corridor. But we managed to strip away a sizeable amount of dirt and debris. Once dried the floor was given numerous coats of a protective coating that gives a subtle shine and enriches the colours of the tiles.

When it comes to cleaning Victorian tile floors with tiles manufactured by the likes of Minton, Campbell or Maw. There are a few considerations to take into account, as it’s not as simple as quickly applying a coat of flash or even worse cilit bang and leaving to dry. Far from it!

We often use a prop to demonstrate how clean we can get the customers tiles, or if possible a decent sized test square. The sample below had already been cleaned with general household cleaners prior to us using our specialist cleaners and was originally designed as a speed test, to compare our products against current brand leaders; cleaning took less than a minute to complete then left to dry.

We’ve recently started work on a lovely geometric floor laid approximately 1904. What was immediately apparent was the tiles had raised into a hump in the centre of the floor. This is always a cause for concern as it’s far more than a simple case of tile de-bonding, here we have an adhesive bed that has separated from the original concrete base.

As many of our customers will know we got to pretty great lengths to make our business as green as possible.
- Our own range cleaning products are fully biodegradable
- Sealers used are water based with little or no odour.
- Our use of water is kept to an absolute minimum.
- Our tile adhesive is the new BAL Supercover which is made partially from recycled rubber and comes with a manufacturers 25 year guarantee.
- Where possible we try and recycle original tiles by restoring them or if they are damaged, cutting them down into smaller sized tiles.
- And finally, we’re soon to be taking delivery of a new Peugeot Bipper van, which offers great economy and lower emissions
